An Inside Look
Processed Food
HIDDEN INGREDIENTS THAT HARM
Foods that come in a box, can, or bag may seem convenient but
in reality these products often contain unhealthy ingredients—
preservatives and chemicals to lengthen shelf life, and added sugars
and fats to enhance flavor.
One ingredient that’s often added to processed food is phosphates.
As reported in online health magazine Rodale News, higher-than-
normal phosphate levels in adults have been linked to health
problems such as kidney deterioration and weakened bones. Another
sneaky ingredient lurking in processed foods is sugar. Whether in
the form of refined sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, sugar is found
in everything from crackers to canned beans. Sugar prevents the
hormone in your brain from telling you to stop eating, and so there’s
a tendency to feel hungry, even if you really aren’t.
