Most are cuddly, adoring and as sweet as dogs come. Some are lap
sitters; some aren’t. In areas with any predator--even hunting birds and
owls--they must be kept indoors or held close on leashes. Hawks and
owls can fly off with small dogs, so you must maintain constant vigil. This
curious, quick-moving sprite doesn’t need much outdoor exercise, but he
does enjoy dashing around the (fenced!) yard and accompanying you for
walks. Larger dogs may view him as a delicacy, so a Maltese must always
be leashed or fenced for his own protection. Fences should be triple-
checked for slight gaps through which he might wriggle. If your children
aren’t old enough to make sure your house’s doors are always closed,
and that your dog is inside, please select a larger breed of dog. Talking
of children, while their sweet and happy nature makes them a wonderful
pet, the Maltese is best suited for adult-only families or those with older
children. It’s true that Maltese love children, but many times children do
not understand how easy it is to hurt such a small dog. A child meant well
is little solace to a Maltese who has been accidentally stepped on, sat
on, rolled on, squeezed, or dropped onto the patio. If you are considering
adding a Maltese to your family and have children, be sure to talk to the
kids about safety for the dog, responsibilities and how to avoid irritating
the dog unnecessarily, such as pulling the tail or ears. Due to their size,
many owners think that they do not need to walk their Maltese but regular
physical activity decreases behaviour and separation anxiety issues.
They do not require vigorous activity to stay in shape. A walk around the
neighbourhood or short play sessions throughout the day is all they need
to stay healthy. Running is one of their favourite activities and a trip to the
park or play time in fenced yard makes them very happy.
                                                        TouGH To TRaIN
These little dogs love being spoiled, but they require strong yet gentle
pack leader that will set limits and boundaries to help them become
independent and confident dogs. Maltese respond well to training and
many enjoy learning tricks. They will do anything to please their owners
