Chapter 2 – Fundamentals of Laser Tattoo Removal v1.0
Treating very near the eyes
All Q-switched and picosecond lasers generate huge powers which are potentially very dangerous to the eyes.
If a treatment is required very near the eyes, or on the eyelids, then ‘intra-ocular shields’ should be used (image right). These must be carefully applied under the eyelids, with a topical anaesthetic, preferably by a trained person.
They must meet the required regulatory standards to ensure full protection of the eyes.
It is important to be sure you use the correct eye-shields. They must be designed for laser use otherwise you run a very serious risk of damaging your patients’ eyes.
We highly recommend you only use these eye-shields if you, or a colleague, are properly trained in their application. You don’t want to damage anyone’s eyes, either with the laser energy or with poor application of the shields!
