Chapter 2 – Fundamentals of Laser Tattoo Removal v1.0
Laser Safety Glasses
As described in Chapter 1, the safety of your eyes is absolutely paramount – after all, you have only one pair!
All laser safety glasses MUST display the wavelengths for which they offer protection and, at what level they offer it. They use specially designed filters to limit the penetration of unwanted laser light.
Hence, they must show the wavelength(s) and the corresponding optical densities (OD). These glasses show these details on the ‘glass’, or filter, part, while others put this data on the frames (below).
Figure 47: Laser safety glasses
Laser safety glasses used in the EU must comply with the standard EN 207:2017, which sets down all of the safety requirements. This includes both pulsed and continuous lasers. These standards will ensure that your eyes are properly protected when using such high-powered lasers and must display the CE Mark. Do not take any risks with your eyes – exposure to the powers emitted by QS or pico- lasers can damage your retinas PERMANENTLY!!
Figure 48: These glasses offer protection for the wavelengths range 755-810nm (at OD 7+), 532 and 1064nm (also at OD 7+) and the CO2 wavelength, 10600nm (at OD 5+).
So, these are useful for QS and pico- alex, Nd:YAG (both wavelengths) and also for the diode laser (up to 810nm) and the CO2 laser.
An OD of 7 means that the protection level is 107, or 10,000,000. It means that only 1 watt of light will penetrate these glasses, at those wavelengths, if 10 million watts is incident on the front surface. An OD of “7+” means that the protection level is greater than 10 million! Given that a QS, or picosecond, laser can easily generate an output of more than 100 million watts of power, you can see why these protection levels are so high!
