spirits. You will be amazed at what comes off. Work in a well ventilated
area. Mineral spirits can make you dizzy and it is flammable. Buy
“ordorless” spirits if you can. Hang your rags out on a line to air dry and
after a few days dispose of them. After the desk is dry apply some paste
wax (Howard’s or Briwax) to a small area and see what it looks like. It
probably will look better but it may still be dark. The dark is the old finish
and there’s not much you can do about that without getting very technical.
If it is too dark for your taste you will not lose anything by refinishing the
piece.
I have an “old” desk chair that I am looking to replace. Before
Q. discarding it, I considered that it might be fairly old. Have you
ever heard of the brand “Marble and Shatluck Chair Company” out of
Cleveland? Best regards, —Nikki M.
I believe you are referring to the company known as Marble and
A. Shattuck. Marble and Shattuck was a well known chair maker in
Cleveland in the late 19th and early 20th century. They mass produced
oak swivel office chairs that today sell for around $150 at auction. They
also had a very nice line of bench made Windsor chairs that are worth
considerably more and they had a line of oak Arts & Craft chairs that are
very valuable today. Your chair may be of interest to a collector or dealer
of turn of the century oak.
