NOVELTY POSTCARDS OF THANKSGIVING DAY
by Roy Nuhn
Thanksgiving Day was increasingly celebrated across the nation during the 18th and 19th
centuries. So much so that president Abraham Lincoln, acting upon the forceful suggestion
put forth by Godey’s Lady Book editor Sarah Hale, proclaimed it a national holiday in 1863.
The following year, the last Thursday of each November was designated as the occasion for
a nationwide observance.
Every year afterward, similar presidential proclamations were issued. Despite president
Franklin D. Roosevelt’s efforts to change the date, the nation has traditionally honored the
Pilgrim’s holiday ever since on the same general date.
