veneer off the top. It is a piece a little bigger than a quarter. The mover
saved all the little pieces for me so it could be fixed. However, the adjuster
on the phone told me that veneer can’t be repaired. Is he, perhaps,
thinking of the laminate-type veneer, not the wooden type? Am I totally
wrong in thinking it can be fixed? And when the repair person comes, is
there anything I should ask him or listen for to be sure he is knowledgeable
about repairing antiques? Thanks for your advice. Angie
Angie - I can’t imagine why the adjuster told you that veneer
A. cannot be repaired. A repair like that is a fairly simple procedure
for almost any touch up and repair artist, especially if you have all the
pieces. The pieces just need to be glued back in place. What glue to use
is whatever the repair person is most comfortable with. We can endlessly
debate the relative merits of yellow glue, hide glue, epoxy resin and
“quick” glues for spot repair but it really boils down to what the craftsman

For an in-shop repair I personally would use yellow glue so that I have

As for determining the qualifications of the repair person, you can’t

know or has been recommended to you by a good source. You can then
ask the insurance or moving company to reimburse you for the repair cost.
4 That way the repair person is working for you, not the company. He or she
has to please you, not some misinformed adjuster. The cost is just a detail
when the piece in question is important to you.
