Two—Birthday Dilemma
Aimi looked at the little yellow card again. “What does RSVP mean?” she asked.
“RSVP is an abbreviation for French words,” said Grami. “Sort of like short-hand.”
“Oh,” said Aimi. “Like a short name for a long name?”
“Exactly,” said Grami. “RSVP is a short name for a long name, in French.”
“What’s the long name?” asked Aimi.
“Répondez s’il vous plait,” said Grami. “It means Reply (Répondez) please (s’il vous plait). The twins want to know if you can attend their party.”
Aimi went to the telephone. “I want to répondez s’il vous plait,” she said, trying to pronounce the words just like Grami.
“Very good,” Grami
said, smiling. “You just learned your first French words. And, yes, répondez s’il vous plait.”
Aimi punched in the phone number on the cell phone. She heard the phone ring several
times.
