Reusing Foundations
Investigation strategies
Brief description:
CGL have worked with structural engineers, project managers
and contractors on multiple projects to investigate and test
existing foundations this has included the organising of:
Ÿ Establishment of historic design data
Ÿ Coring of slab and pile construction to full depth to
establish depth and concrete quality
Ÿ Parallel seismic investigation of pile depths
Ÿ Non destructive testing:
¡ Transient dynamic response Parallel seismic testing
¡ Linear polarization resistance
Ÿ 3D LiDAR for void investigation
Understanding the former engineering structure, liaising closely
with structural engineering teams and organising the logistics
of the best available techniques has played to CGL’s strengths
over the years.

Reuse of pylon foundations
Brief description:
Working with main contractors such as Balfour Beatty and
Babcock on the re-wiring of major routes resulted in different
loading considerations from those the original foundations
were designed to carry in the 1960's. Designers needs to
check that the existing tower foundations can support these
new loadings and confirm they are in good condition at the
correct depth, and of the size shown on the original
drawings. Services comprised:
Ÿ Combine geotechnical and NDT testing
Ÿ Non-destructive testing
¡ Transient dynamic response
NDT preparation below pylon
¡ Linear polarization resistance
Ÿ Interpretative reporting to design teams
