him that he just needed to get some rest, and eat, and get walking again. We would do all of that. We were sure of it. But for now, my dad just looked beautiful laying there. He was so calm. So serene. So hopeful.
Awhile later the front door of Johnny's house opened. All three of the police officers walked in. One kind officer was carrying Ginger.
They all approached Johnny's bed and Ginger was handed to me. My heart felt like it skipped a beat and then melted. Ginger sniffed the air around her. She was so happy to be home. I put her down on the bed and she jumped on my dad's chest, immediately waking him up.
Like a miracle, Johnny's eyes opened wider than I'd seen them in a very long time.
Johnny smiled a big, bright, beautiful smile, and in a clear, wonderful, lyrical voice he said, “Hey, little girl!”
Wow.
It was the most amazing sight anyone could ever see. It was beautiful! It was amazing!
