can improve his circumstances and resolve his own problems. The highest form of charity, however, is the gift of wisdom that leads to Self-realization, thereby freeing the individual from the cycles of birth and death.
Charity in the Light of Lord Krishna’s Teachings
Lord Krishna speaks of three important duties in human life:
1. Yajna or sacri ce: Relating oneself with God,
2. Dana or charity: One’s duty towards other human
beings
3. Tapas or austerity: The duty towards one’s own body and mind, so that his personality may become an instrument equipped with the ability to perform yajna and dana.
Since God, society and the human personality are deeply interrelated, these three are also closely interconnected. Therefore, from a broader perspective, charity can be austerity and sacri ce. In simpler terms, develop your body and mind in such a way that you are increasingly more serviceable to society. Then you are able to move towards God who dwells within your heart, by sacri cing sel shness, greed, anger, hatred, egoism and other impurities of the mind.
