chapter five 117
In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna describes three types of charity corresponding to the three gunas:
That charity that is given to one who does not reciprocate, which is given with the feeling that it is one’s duty to do so, and which is given in the proper place and time to a deserving recipient is considered satwic or pure. That charity that is given reluctantly, with the expectation of receiving something in return or with a view of a personal gain is said to be rajasic, or impure. That charity that is given at an improper place and time, to an undeserving person and in a disrespectful manner is called tamasic or dark.
(Srimad Bhagavad Gita 17: 20-22).
Of these three, one should avoid charity that is rajasic and tamasic, and promote charity that is satwic. However, many who interpret the Gita literally and are not guided by a spiritual preceptor are unable to understand the signi cance of this de nition of satwic charity. They try to look for the ideal holy place, the perfect astrological condition, and a highly deserving recipient in order to practice satwic charity. But since they are guided by a subtle sense of miserliness, they are unable to nd the conjunction of these three requirements, and ultimately decide to leave all their possessions to their children.
