your charity will become rajasic. That is, you will be charitable for sel sh reasons, and thus continue to intensify your state of bondage.
Give generously: If you are calculating and miserly, your charity becomes rajasic. To be sure, you should practice charity according to your capacity; however, develop a sense of openheartedness and magnanimity. Never think that what you have given is too much. Develop the feeling that what you have given is too little, and thereby strive for greater acts of charity. Never feel that you will be lacking as a result of your giving—because the greatest giver is God.
Give with a sense of shyness: Always give with the feeling that you could have done more. Remember that the person receiving your gift may develop the idea that you are the giver, and may become obliged to you—and that feeling of obligation is not desirable. Develop the attitude that the materials you use in your acts of charity do not belong to you, but to God. Therefore, when people applaud you for your acts of charity, you should develop a sense of shyness, a feeling of modesty.
Echoing this theme, Lord Jesus said of charity:
But when thou giveth alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth. That thy alms be in secret and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. (KJV Matthew 6: 2-4)
