chapter twelve 273
“How can a man be born when he is old?” asked Nicodemus. Jesus explained to him that spiritual birth is not a physical event that can be seen by one’s eyes. All spiritual unfoldment is beyond the range of the senses. Jesus states,
The Spirit is like the wind that blows wherever it wants to. You can hear the wind, but you don’t know where it comes from or where it is going.
(CEV John 3:8)
With spiritual rebirth, one resembles the wind that does not come from a particular place, or go to a particular place, yet the sound is heard and the effect is seen. The lives of enlightened Sages are not con ned, and their bountiful effects are seen in their Divine works. Wind infuses life and vitality into living beings. Sages who have entered the Kingdom of Heaven (Enlightenment) have attained spiritual rebirth and continue to infuse harmony, peace, and upliftment in humanity.
Similar was the explanation presented by Buddha when a disciple asked him where a man goes in the state of Liberation. He blew out a candle and asked the disciple where the ame had gone. The passage of the ame cannot be seen. So too, the movement of the Spirit cannot be interpreted in the language of the senses.
