But then, the senses by themselves cannot illumine things. What illuminates the senses is the mind. What illuminates the mind is the intellect. What illuminates the intellect is the Divine Self. That Divine Self is your essential identity. You are not the ego-personality. You are the Light of lights. If you were to discover that Divine identity and become enlightened through a process of spiritual discipline, devotion, meditation, wisdom, and righteous action, you would become “a city that is set on a hill—a city that cannot be hidden.”
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
When you are in a dark house, the moment you turn on a lamp that has been placed in a suitable location, the entire house is lit up. Similarly, when your main focus is Enlightenment, you are placing your light in a favorable location. You are essentially the Light of lights, but that Light must be used effectively to enlighten the mind. Attainment of Enlightenment has two aspects: subjective and objective. Subjectively, you become free of all mental pain and sorrow. Objectively, you become a Guiding Light to the world around you. The Light of God shines through the mind of an enlightened Sage or Saint, and from that enlightened mind other people receive inspiration and guidance.
