dwell the potentiality and the introspection of Abraham, as well as the creative expression and splendor of David. Since these two factors are well integrated within his personality, Christ transcends them both.
The Virgin Mary and Joseph
Joseph is symbolic of the individual soul that has attained simplicity and purity. Prior to puri cation, the struggling souls of the world are wedded to a mind that is lled with worldly impressions. Therefore, their progeny take the form of worldly values—desires, cravings, attachments that never yield the ultimate joy and ful llment.
However, Joseph was wedded to Mary, who symbolizes the higher, intuitive mind. The virginity of Mary is symbolic of her intrinsic purity. While for the worldly mind there are many realities to which it must be wedded, for the intuitive mind there is only one Reality. The intuitive mind does not perceive duality or differences in the homogeneous existence of the Absolute. It is the perception of duality that taints the spirit of man.
The individual soul, in its journey of evolution, comes in conjunction with the intuitive mind. Thus, spiritual aspiration is born. All worldly values are born through the ego and the lower mind; but in the birth of spiritual aspiration, the ego is gradually transcended.
