chapter one 35
There is an in nite source of power within each person. We need only to tap into it by removing the obstructions created by the mind. Through re ection and self-introspection, the causes of the obstructions reveal themselves. It is then that we can persistently remove them from the very depths of the unconscious.
Strength of mind lies not in how much you can intimidate others, but in how well you can control your own agitation and anger through re ection, sublimation and nally transcendence of these traits. In provocative conditions, can you restrain anger that dissipates your energy? Can you avoid reciprocating, and as a result, express endurance, patience, and eventually profound love towards a person who is trying to provoke you?
If so, your mind will be lled with the radiant rays of spiritual peace that exist in the very depths of your being. It will be lled with a sublimating force that is so powerful that a violent person approaching you with an evil intention may suddenly forget all about it! And gradually it will exert a transforming in uence on the person who was compelled to express his violence.
It is said that once several royal princes decided that Buddha was not an authentic teacher, and they wanted to ridicule him to test his patience. With that desire in mind, they gathered together, mounted their horses, and galloped into Buddha’s abode.
