ME109 Elevators by Don Bradshaw And here are the newly formed parts made on
those molds from 2024 “soft” material:
ME109 elevators are extremely rare,
the only way to secure a pair is to build them.
With the exception of a few general pages, drawings of
the elevator parts do not exist. The original
manufacturer went out of business in 1945.
So, the first step is to obtain as much of an original
elevator as possible, and completely disassemble it. The
more sample parts the better. Use pictures to fill in the
blanks in information if necessary.
A number of elevators will made to facilitate trading
for other 109 parts:
Then you make the male and female molds for press
forming the complicated pieces. This is very time
consuming, as they are milled from 3/4” thick aluminum.
Here’s a photo of the original parts beside the male
molds that will form the new parts
Once the new pieces are fully formed and trimmed, they
are heat treated in a furnace and quenched, which
rearranges the 2024 “soft" aluminum’s molecular
structure, and the part fully hardens in a couple of days.
