After the Game

Dallas Chapter of Jack & Jill of America, Inc.,

               Associates Group

The Associates of the Dallas Chapter of Jack & Jill of America, Inc., organized over thirty-five years
ago, has been a busy community leader for many years now. Among its most recent initiatives
include service to such venues as the Irma Rangel Leadership School for Young Women, the Vogel
Alcove, in addition to at least one international project, focused on an orphanage in Freetown, Sierra
Leone, West Africa. Orphaned when their parents were killed in the civil wars, which have routinely
engulfed Sierra Leone, as many as 90 or so children housed in that country’s church-sponsored
Wellington Orphanage, were completely without shoes. In 2007, members of the Dallas Associates
learned of the plight of these children, and launched an initiative to purchase shoes for them. In
cooperation with a local church and with North Lake Community College, the Associates donated
shoes for all of those children. Vogel Alcove is a free women’s shelter, childcare facility, and case
management entity, located in downtown Dallas, which focuses on providing a healthy physical and
mental haven for displaced women and their children, many of whom have been impacted by
domestic violence. The shelter also works to reintegrate the women and their children back into the
community, by providing workforce training for the women; to assist in this effort, for some time
now, members of the Dallas Associates have contributed gently used professional clothing to assist
the women, as they work through the interview process, and
prepare to re-enter the world of work. In addition, Associates have donated hundreds of pairs of caps
and mittens for the center’s children, primarily at the Christmas season. This project has been
               ongoing since December 3, 2007.
