The Associates’ capstone project is its work with a DISD magnet school. The task force, composed of
some of the associates, and under the leadership of Gloria Lett, positions prospective students who
live throughout the Dallas Metroplex, to apply for admission to DISD’s Irma Rangel Leadership
School for 102 Young Women. Thus far, the Associates have completed two years of training for
students, targeting several content disciplines as well as some social arenas. The task force includes a
compositionist, who directs writing clinics, a math specialist, who provides training in those content
areas, as well as an expert on interviewing skills, who arranges interactive training for these young
girls, in etiquette and other social skills. The training also has a parental orientation component,
wherein parents are apprised of strategies to support their young girls, as well as the school.
To date, the Associates have provided these tutorials to some 50 young ladies, and are proud of the
success of these students as they have moved through the admissions process. The task force is
currently in its third year of enrichment focus, meeting this year at the Paul Laurence Dunbar Library,
for six Saturdays, the first two of each month, October through December. Eleven young girls are
currently enrolled for this latest series of enrichment sessions, while their parents whose attendance is
mandatory, learn more about the school, about the application process, and how they and their girls
can become good school citizens, once enrolled at Rangel. A remarkable school that consistently
earns National Blue Ribbon status, the Irma Rangel Leadership School for Young Women is named
for the first Hispanic female elected to the Texas State Legislature. The school’s principal is Vivian
Taylor Samudio.supported by the Foundation for the Education for Young Women, the Dallas
campus is the home of the first such school, with schools in Austin, Fort Worth, Houston, Lubbock,
and San Antonio. In this academic year, the task force concentrates its training efforts on fifth
graders; the Rangel School includes grades sixth through twelve. In addition to a monetary donation,
the Dallas Associates support the Jack and Jill Foundation through
its involvement with and support of the Dallas Chapter’s annual Beautillion. Ava Washington chairs
the Dallas Chapter of the Associates, which has 93 roster members, and about 25-35 active
               participants.
