Tuck the working end through the loop of the
overhand a second time. Tighten by pulling
gently on both ends. As the knot begins to
tighten, twist both ends of the knot in opposite
directions with your fingers. Continue to tighten
to give the knot its characteristic shape.
Ashley’s Stopper Knot
A BULKY STOPPER TO BLOCK HOLES OR SLOTS WHEN
SMALLER STOPPERS PULL FREE
When knots that surround the standing part of a line, such
as overhands and figure 8 knots, are too small, Ashley’s
stopper knot does the job. By bringing the working end back
into play before the final tightening, a knot of satisfactory
bulk is created that will be useful in sailing and other
activities. Clifford W. Ashley, author of The Ashley Book of
Knots, created this knot.
