Planting the Seeds of Mistrust

By the beginning of the twelfth century C.E., Europeans had developed such a mistrust of

money that even the wealthy did not want to associate directly with it. (This is truly when the

collective unconscious shifted dramatically to being “fearful of money, a persistent challenge

            to this day.)

The Crusaders solved this dilemma by creating a sacred military order known as the Knights of

the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem (in 1118 C.E.). The Templars, as they were known, were

chaste and spiritually devout; they were also fierce warriors with sworn vows to protect the

Holy Land and the riches of the European nobility. The Templars created a powerful

international banking institution by providing financial transactions and protection on behalf

of the rich for a fee. They were highly revered, and by all accounts the trust they received was

truly earned by their commitment and loyalty to their vows.
