PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Being encultured into being an aspiring English educator has been a very educational experience. I have
met many wonderful experienced mentor teachers who have paved a way for me to become more
confident and prepared to enter the classroom on my own. As a novice teacher I have managed to become
encultured into being an English by mastering preparation. I have discovered that for me to become as
disciplined as my mentor teachers, I must put more effort in my lessons. This will allow me to be able to
study my professional and personal challenges which will allow me to reflect on the lessons and prepare
much better in my next lesson.
The CAPS curriculum is the most important aspect of our teaching as it guides us on the important topics
and the outcomes that we must achieve. This document goes hand in hand with annual teaching plan
which guides us on how many hours we should teach a topic and when. To achieve this outcome, I have
made it a point that I plan my lessons according to what the curriculum requires us to teach at that specific
time. I apply constant assessment measures to ensure that learners are on the right track with the
curriculum. I also ensure that the topics that I address first are the most important ones and that they are
going to benefit the learners.
As an English teacher I make it my priority that I prepare lessons that will benefit the learners and most
importantly they will enjoy attending my lessons. I always make it a point that I address issues through
self-learning activities. The lessons that I design are thoroughly checked and researched for the benefit
of the learners. I put the learners at the center of learning as the lessons that I plan are meant to help
them to solve real world problems. In my assessment forms whether they are for, during or after the lesson
I always make sure that learners could relate to the challenges that they are being assessed on. I use
tools that learners will enjoy such as videos.
As a teacher I always ensure that I manage my teaching by keeping records of what I have done in my
previous lessons. I also do the same with my assessment plans by seeing what the learners have learnt
and responded well to it and whether do I have to teach it again. There is a teacher file that I have built to
help me keep records and administer my teaching in the English language classroom. I always ensure
that my classroom is attractive and bright. I manage my classroom be ensuring that I set classroom rules
that I set with learners. I am always fair to my learners and I keep good student records so that I can
reward those who work hard.
In a teaching and learning, goals define the overall purpose of the learning process. In my learning goals
I want my learners to be able to read, write and speak English fluently. I want my learners to develop a
culture of speaking English without any doubt in them. The one thing that I want to learn in this is to
become more disciplined in my classrooms. I want to be able to have a full control of my class and be
able to manage them fairly.
