1 From glittering ballrooms in big cities to patches of
dirt under a starry desert sky, people dance
everywhere on our planet. They dance for different
reasons, in different ways, to different rhythms. They
dance when they are happy or sad, to call for rain, to
celebrate a birth. Everywhere, people dance because
they just can’t help it.
2 So kick off your shoes, and let’s dance around
the world.
3 Let’s start at home with tap . . . Have you
ever heard the sound made by a tap
dancer’s feet? An American dance, tap is
known for the rhythmic heel-toe steps
made by the dancers, who wear
special shoes. Tap shoes have metal
plates at the heel and toe, which make a
distinctive sound when the dancers “tap”
them on the floor. Tap was originally
danced with no music at all. Over the years,
however, tap has been danced to many
types of music.
4 Savion Glover is an amazing tap
dancer. He performed in his first Broadway
musical when he was 12. Savion has
changed the way people tap—he has
brought the rhythms of hip-hop and other
music to the tap-dancing stage.
rhythmic If something is rhythmic, it has a pattern of sounds,
movements, or beats that repeat.
distinctive If something is distinctive, it stands out in a way
that makes it different or unusual.
