Pocket Guide to Knots & Splices
different six-strand sennits to choose
from to make a start. Do not be
daunted by its complexity, but look on
it as a series of simple moves in a
symmetrical pattern. Each layer of the
knot needs to be worked into a fair
shape as you go. Do not work it fully
tight until the whole knot is finished. It
is a great help to start with each strand
being a differing color. Have courage,
take it slowly, it is possible! When the
knot is complete, the ends can be
unlayed to make a tassel, or you could
carry on with more sennit.
Alternatively, you can finish the
star by tucking the ends back on
themselves, either into the knot or by
making a double crown.
1 Start with six strands either bound
together or in a six-strand sennit (in this
case a three + three-strand crown sennit).
2 Make a series of interlinked loops. These
will form the points of the star.
3 Crown the strands in a clockwise
direction, keep everything fairly tight and
neat.
