Palm and Needle Whipping on Braided Ropt

Braided rope, especially that with
some kind of core, needs a whipping
that will both stop the end fraying and

also stop the cover moving in relation
to the core itself. On a yacht the ends

of braided rope take a great deal of
punishment, so a very secure

whipping is called for. Although a
palm and needle whipping may take a

little trouble to make and needs both
a sailmaker’s palm and a needle, the
finished whipping is very secure, looks

good, and is highly recommended.
If you have the time there is no

harm in making a second whipping a
few inches back from the first
whipping.
