Pocket Guide to Knots & Splices
1 Open out the strands at the end of the
rope, keeping as much lay in the strands
as possible. Put a loop of whipping twine
round one of the strands and the working
and standing ends of the whipping twine
out of the space between the other two
           strands.
2 Lay the strands of the rope back again,
and make a turn round the rope with the
working end of the whipping twine. Leave
the short standing end and the loop of
           twine to stand free.
3 Keep on wrapping the whipping twine
tightly round the rope, working toward the
           rope’s end.
4 Bring the loop of twine up over the end of
the strand that it was round. The
whipping line should follow the path of
           the groove in the rope.
5 Pull the short standing end to tighten the
           loop round its strand.
6 Take the short standing end that you
have just pulled on up to the top following
           the groove in the rope.
7 Tie the standing and working ends
together with a reef knot in the center of
           the rope.
8 Trim the ends to finish the whipping.
