We have a great working relationship with our marina colleagues! This is almost the tale of
two different bodies of water. The reason we say the tale of two bodies of water is the
organizational structure of the marinas is directly related to the location of Lake Minnetonka or
The St. Croix River.
The interesting part about working with the marinas on the river is they are association based
while Lake Minnetonka’s marinas are still privately owned. This makes for very different
circumstances in regards to purpose and implementation of new ideas. The river marinas
gravitated to the Minnesota Clean Marina immediately. The Lake Minnetonka Marina’s are
now on board, but it’s taken longer. We think it was due to owners needing a more direct
“bottom line” correlation to outcomes. None the less, it’s been an exciting learning
opportunity.
Our working relationship with our Lake Minnetonka colleagues has been huge over the years.
We have worked together with a “strength in numbers” approach regarding regulations of our
governing body, the Lake Minnetonka Conservation District (LMCD). Most recent was a
project to create a new “Qualified Commercial Marina” status for dock reconfiguration. This
was an off-shoot of the State-wide tax reduction and reclassification program for all qualifying
marina throughout the State of Minnesota back in the late 1990’s.
