the past decade, despite social and security restrictions, women have responded to the pressing economic and social challenges faced by their families by venturing into public spaces and entering the labor market. While most formally employed women continue to work in the service sector as teachers, nurses or assistants, many have stepped forward to fill essential roles by leading businesses and creating charity organizations. Home- based micro-enterprises such as baking or sewing have multiplied to earn much-needed income for the family, with Facebook becoming a popular advertising channel. Driven by necessity, women are increasingly going out of the house and can be seen queuing up next to men at banks or driving alone through traffic. Making and saving money, in turn, has boosted their ability to decide on spending, giving them greater agency and social independence.
Global experience shows that women’s involvement
in conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms signi- ficantly reduces the likelihood of their failure and enhances their sustainability. Moreover, women’s partici- pation contributes to post-conflict economic recovery. Both these indicators remain very relevant to the Libya context and represent a window of hope and oppor- tunity. In the meantime, Libyan women continue to demonstrate remarkable resilience and adaptability. The tension between traditional values and change towards modernity will likely continue to define the role and space of women in Libya’s society in the years to come. Their ability to navigate and thrive in challenging circumstances is a testament to their strength, resource- fulness and commitment to building a better future for themselves, their families and society.
