SERVING AS ONE 2019-2020
MISSIONS
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16
As disciples, we become active participants in God’s activity in the world through mission and service. The Missions Team of Scioto Ridge have dedicated themselves to leading our congregation in loving our neighbor and transforming the world. Missional service takes us beyond the doors of our physical church address, to be the church to a lost, hurting and hungry world. We serve locally, nationally, and globally with both financial support and hands-on servant support.
Feeding and Clothing Ministries – We currently have several local outreach ministries in which we serve meals, stock food pantries, perform volunteer work and provide clothing and personal care kits to people who are low income, homeless, senior citizens and those with health issues.
Church for All People UMC – Monthly meal preparation, clothing collections, personal care kits, cooking classes, and donations of school supplies and Christmas gifts make up a large part of the support Scioto Ridge provides to the Church for All People.
Clair UMC – Servants are continually making trips to Clair UMC on the southside of Columbus. They spend their time serving meals, dropping off clothing collections, providing personal care kits, stocking the food pantry, and teaching others through the Crockpot Ministry.
Ronald McDonald House – Life groups and others from Scioto Ridge provide a homemade meal once a month for the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House.
Ray and Linda Miller Mission Garden – A dedicated and talented group of servants have created the mission garden right here at Scioto Ridge. The garden produces 1,500 pounds of fresh produce for local distribution each summer.
West Side Free Store Meal Ministry – The West Side Free Store provides meals and the ability for people to shop for free clothing and personal care items. Servants from Scioto Ridge prepare and serve meals there once a month.
Sullivant Women’s Respite Center – The center is a drop-in location for women to come and relax in a safe setting. Scioto Ridge provides personal care items and clothing.
Star House – Star House is a welcoming drop-in center for transitional youth ages 14-24 experiencing homelessness and serves as a safe and accepting place where they can connect with a concerned community. The youth are able to do their laundry, eat, rest, bathe, and receive clothing. Star House acts as a place to connect to the services available through other agencies that provide educational, health, financial, and food subsidies along with job-seeking skills. Scioto Ridge provides personal care items, clothing, and meals.
Mission Trips
While local missions ministry is crucial to transforming our community, the members of Scioto Ridge mission trips take quite literally the third part of our mission statement – Transform the World. People step out of their comfort zones, get on the road or a plane, and meet those in need where they are.
Henderson Settlement – This is a UMC mission site in Appalachia near the Kentucky/Tennessee border. Our team members repair housing, paint, replace windows and doors, build room additions and porches, and complete siding on homes. In addition, servants work in their food pantry, clothing store, library, Senior Center and Young Mothers’ Center.
Henderson Settlement for Youth – This is another visit to the Henderson Settlement during spring break each March. Members of the middle and high school youth group travel to Frakes, Kentucky to complete light construction work and provide any other jobs needed.
Mexico – Each March, dozens of people spend a week in Nuevo Progreso in northern Mexico across the border from Mercedes, Texas. The team builds homes for those in need. They also provide maintenance for the water system in our partner church and help in expanding the children’s library.
