Ibuprofen poisoning by Edward de Beukelaer, UK
A 5 year old border terrier had stolen a few (2-4?) ibuprofen 400 mg tablets from a bag 5 days prior.
The day after eating the tablets he had vomited black. His appetite steadily reduced and he had become lethargic.
The owner presented him 5 days later: on admitting he was very dehydrated (skin tent not correcting at all) and the stool sample they brought was very large and mostly black and tarry. He had lost 1 kg of weight (9.5 kg normally) in a few days.
Urea, creatinine and phosphorus were all raised (see table)
Repertorisation:
I opted for Phos knowing that he was a very friendly joyful little dog.
Okoubaka 30C is used because the cause is a poisoning. Px: Okoubaka 30, alternating with Phosphorus 10M, every hour and drip (Hartmans).
He started eating within 2 hrs.
Full hydration and stabilisation is achieved after 36 hours. No vomiting occurred again. The patient is discharged from the surgery. No other medicines were used.

Phos LM1 started 23 May, daily dosing.
By end July he is back to normal in relation to weight and
energy (playing etc).
This dog had been on 5.4 mg Apoquel for chronic ear irritation and itching for 2 years and 2 months before the
time of poisoning. Prior to this medication, he had been treated all his life for the same issues.
The itching stopped at the time of poisoning and has not returned since (September).
Phosphorus did allow him to recover from the poisoning. But when all the symptoms relating to this poisoning were resolved, the ear irritation (which was always the beginning of the skin irritation) started to creep in again and was not responsive to a change of dilution of the Phosphorus.
I made a new repertorisation at the end of July which proposes Calc (see over page).
I have known this dog for some time. It is a really friendly dog, which has an owner, who loves him very much but who has a very rough way of treating him (and the rest of the family members who come along to the consultations).
Little Teddy is always flung on the table and patted too brutally: you can see he is used to it but he does not like it.
