MALAY SKETCHES

burial, when the moment arrives for carrying the
body to the place of sepulture, the dead man is
given a new name, by which he is ever afterwards
known. That name is chosen with some reference
to his earthly life. Thus, there is Al-merhum or
Merhum Pasir Panjang (that is, "The Sultan who
died at Pasir Panjang"), Merhum Kahar-Allah
The late Sultan to whom God
             (" gave strength "),
             and so on.
When this King was buried, the name conferred
upon him was Merhum Rafir- Allah, and the meaning
                " God him."

NOTE. Since writing the above, I have read the
following in the Home News :
"In the Lord Mayor's Court on Oct. 14, before
the Assistant Judge and a jury, the case of ' Fischer
             v. Brown' was concluded. This (says the Times)
was an action brought by Fischer and Co., a firm
of Bombay merchants, to recover from Messrs.
