Kim managed to pay Scott back after he climbed down from the jet, as she also had a well shaken bottle of champagne and had recruited their two boys to help by manning two fire extinguishers. Several other friends also participated cheerfully manning even more fire extinguishers.
The next main event on the calendar was the Thursday afternoon Change of Command where Kim would relinquish command of the 612th Theater Operations Group and the 474th Expeditionary Group.
There was a small reception prior to the ceremony so that the families and friends of both the outgoing and incoming Commanders could meet each other, which was a very nice touch.
For me, it was really great seeing both Kim’s and Scott’s family again after two years and being able to spend a little time with them.
Lt. Gen. Mark Kelly was the main speaker at Kim’s Change of Command and spoke very highly of Kim’s tour. Lt. Gen. Kelly presented her with
the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious service and achievement. When Kim spoke, she mentioned the DFC Society when she was thanking everyone and later said she was very glad that we came and attended the ceremony.
Kim, with the help of their children and friends, pays back husband Scott with a champagne soaking after his last A-10 flight as Commander of the 355th Fighter Wing.
Lt. Gen. Mark Kelly accepts the unit Guidon from Col. Kim Campbell as she relinquishes command of the 612th Theatre Operations Group and 474th Expeditionary Group, 28 June 2018, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Tucson, Arizona.
