The next event was Friday morning. It was Scott’s Change of Command where he would turn over the 355th Fighter Wing.
With all the change of commands that I have attended or knew about, I have never heard of two Changes of Commands occurring on consecutive days, especially for a husband and wife.
Lt Gen Kelly was back on stage for this finale and it went extremely well. It was very similar to Kim’s in some respects as Scott was also awarded a Legion of Merit. He too had many of the military leaders, local politicians, business people and various organizations in attendance.
After the ceremony, we talked with Lt Gen Kelly about joining the DFC Society himself. He agreed to do so (and his wife said she would remind him), especially after we provided him an application form and a self-addressed envelope.
The Campbells didn’t waste any time afterwards as they were both on their way to their next duty station, the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs which should be better for home life. The two-year tour in Tucson did not include a lot of home time for them together. It also frequently required assistance from family members when both Kim and Scott were gone at the same time.
All in all, it was really a great time, especially seeing two great and very supportive DFCS members being honored.
Lt. Gen. Mark Kelly congratulates Col. Scott Campbell on his award of the Legion of Merit as he relinquishes command of the 355th Fighter Wing, 29 June 2018, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Tucson, Arizona.
