TOTHEPEOPLEOFTHEUNITEDSTATES:
It is my sorrowful duty to announceofficially the death of George HerbertWalker Bush,the forty-first Presidentof the United States,on November30, 2018.
PresidentBushled a great Americanlife, one that combinedand personifiedtwo of our Nation'sgreatestvirtues: an entrepreneurialspirit and a commitment to public service. Our country will greatly miss his inspiring example.
On the day he turned 18, 6 months after the attack on Pearl Harbor,GeorgeH.W.Bushvolunteeredfor combatduty inthe SecondWorldWar. Theyoungestaviatorin UnitedStatesnaval history at the time, he flew 58 combat missions,including one in which, after taking enemy tire, he parachutedfrom his burning plane into the PacificOcean. After the war, he returned home and started a business. In his words, "the big thing" he learned from this endeavorwas "the satisfactionof creatingjobs."
The same unselfishspirit that motivated his businesspursuits laterinspiredhimto resumethe publicservicehebeganasa youngman. First,asamemberofCongress,thenasAmbassador to the UnitedNations,Chiefof the UnitedStatesLiaisonOfficein China,Directorof CentralIntelligence,VicePresident,andfinally Presidentof the UnitedStates,GeorgeH.W.Bushguidedour Nationthrough the ColdWar, to its peacefuland victoriousend, and into the decadesof prosperitythat havefollowed.
