During a recent hands-on science activity, Year 5 students engaged in an interactive experi-
ment designed to demonstrate the key stages of human digestion.
The objective was to provide a practical understanding of how food is mechanically and

chemically broken down within the digestive system.

We started by using crackers and water to show what happens in the mouth. We crushed the

crackers in a plastic bag (just like chewing) and added water to act like saliva. Next, we added
a bit of juice or vinegar to the bag to show how the stomach uses acid to break food down
even more.

Then, we pushed the mixture through a pair of tights, which acted like the intestines. This

showed how food moves through our digestive system and how the body takes the nutrients
it needs.

Everyone had a great time learning how our bodies turn food into energy. It was a fun way
to see digestion in action!
