than relying on rote procedures, they know why the method works—and can often
 explain it in multiple ways.
At Abuja Prep, we believe that great mathematicians aren’t born—they are built,
block by block, with curiosity, creativity and confidence.
This progression from concrete to abstract doesn’t just support success in tests; it
cultivates resilience, flexibility, and deeper learning—hallmarks of the Cambridge How Parents can help Support their children with Maths – Abuja Prep Calculations

lems but thinking like mathematicians, developing reasoning skills and confidence
in their own ability to tackle new challenges. To support consistency and progression in how we teach mathematical concepts
across the school, we have developed the Abuja Prep Calculations Policy. This

document outlines the CPA approach in detail and sets out clear methods for each
area of number and calculation, from Early Years through to Upper Key Stage 2. It
provides guidance on the appropriate use of manipulatives, pictorial strategies, and
written methods at each stage of learning. Parents and carers are encouraged to re-
fer to the policy when supporting homework, so that children encounter consistent

methods both at home and in school. The policy is available by clicking below and
we warmly invite families to explore it as a way to better understand and engage
           with their child’s mathematical journey.

Embedding the CPA Approach at Abuja Prep
In every classroom across the school, you’ll see evidence of this progression. In
Early Years, children might use counters to make number bonds to 10. In Key

Stage 1, they move on to drawing part-whole models and bar charts. By Key Stage
2, pupils are solving word problems using formal written methods, with a secure
conceptual understanding built on years of concrete and visual learning.
