Curriculum & Instruction Wraps Up First
Year Accelerated Reader Competition
Southside is wrapping up our fi rst Accelerated Reader Competition with resounding success students have
earned an astonishing 205,000 points in seven short months!
How it worked: students read a book, took a short quiz to assess how well they understood it, and earned points
toward prizes and recognition. Virtual or remote students were not left out of the competition; books and AR
quizzes were accessed online, at any time.
Every month, each grade level teacher, student, and class who had the most points were recognized with pizza
parties and gift cards. The campus who earned the most points overall was presented with a trophy, and their
achievement acknowledged at the monthly Board meeting.
This competition was a friendly rivalry between campuses that would also instill a love of reading in our students.
Students who read outside of school tend to benefi t more - gain a more robust vocabulary, become better/more
fl uent readers, build confi dence, improve writing skills, increase test scores, and so much more! Add in a little
competition, and all of Southside -- community, teachers, and students -- reap the benefi ts.
