Shepperson Memorial
Academic Career.
In 1948 George Shepperson was appointed Lecturer in Imperial and American History
at Edinburgh University.
After twelve years, he achieved the rank of Senior Lecturer. The following year, he
was appointed Reader in Imperial and American History and in 1963 appointed
William Robertson Professor of Commonwealth and American History.
He served as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1974 - 1977. Shepperson was
instrumental in the founding of two centres: the Centre of African Studies in 1964 and
the Centre of Canadian Studies in 1979. He was Convener for the former twice (1964
– 1966 and 1973 – 74) and the latter once (1979 – 1982).
Scholarly and academic activities.
During Edinburgh University Quatercentenary celebrations in 1983, George
Shepperson delivered three public lectures:
