The bowline on a bight is a double-loop variation of the basic
bowline (see pages 48–49). It is a knot tied in the centre of
a line or rope when a loop is required and both ends are
inaccessible. It makes a perfect improvised hoist if you have
to lower or raise a sick or injured person, with one loop
becoming the seat and the other going under the person’s
armpits and around their chest. It is important that the load BowlInes and Bends
should be applied equally to both standing loops.
Its advantages are that the loops do not slip and it is
reasonably easy to untie after being exposed to strain.
3
Lift the two loops from
behind and bring them
up and through to the
front of the bight.
4
Lift the bight and
reposition it behind the
standing parts of the
knot.
5
Make sure the knot is
lying flat, then tighten it.
