In the nautical world, bends go back a long way and have
been used extensively to join heavier rope or cable to a
thinner line. The heaving-line bend is used when you have
a rope or cable that is too heavy to be thrown ashore or
across an intervening gap on its own. It is pulled into position
using a much lighter ‘heaving’ line which is thrown ahead of

Bring the same working
end back towards you
across the front of the
loop.

Tuck the end through
the loop made in the
thinner line as shown.

Tighten the knot
around the heavier
rope.
