SOUTH LOGAN COUNTY 14
dizzy & daffy dean
The greatest pitching
duo ever, Dizzy (Jay) and
Daffy (Paul) Dean had
53 combined wins for
the St. Louis Cardinals
in 1934, which included
four games in the World
Series. The Cardinals won
the World Series that year,
thanks in large part to the
Dean brothers. Both born
in the small town of Lucas
(in the southwest corner
of Logan County), the
boys are said to have lived
to play baseball (most
barefoot) with their older
brother, Elmer “Poodle”,
as their catcher. Being
born to sharecroppers,
they would help work the
land during the early part of the day and play baseball all afternoon
into the evening, often traveling the distance to Magazine just for
a pickup game and often barefoot. They moved away from Logan
County after their mother passed away of tuberculosis in 1917.
