THURGOOD MARSHALL LIBRARY

The Marshall Library offers a variety of materials and services to its users. Information about what
is available in the collection (books, journals, government documents, videos) can be accessed
through several sources such as, the Library’s online public access catalog, and WorldCat. Library
orientation and instruction in the use of its resources are offered through the Reference Department
in either formal or informal settings.
Currently, the Library’s holdings number more than 300,000 volumes. The Library also
subscribes to more than 800 periodicals, newspapers, and other serials titles in print format. In
addition, access to thousands of scholarly journals, many offering full-text articles, encyclopedias,
and dictionaries is available electronically through ResearchPort. A collection of reference
materials, periodicals, and items reserved for class assignments is collected and available for onsite
use. Other facilities within the Library include: private study carrels, group study rooms, instruction
classrooms and a 24/7 study gallery.
Bowie’s students, faculty and staff can borrow materials using a current BowieCard from other
libraries within the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI) through a
cooperative lending agreement, or submit an electronic request for interlibrary loan from other
libraries world-wide through Illiad.
The Thurgood Marshall Library is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art information technologies
(scanners, Apple and personal computers, printers and copiers) for patron use. The Library is also
equipped for wireless Internet access.
SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES
Interim Dean for Graduate Studies: Cosmas U. Nwokeafor
The School of Graduate Studies guides and directs, administers, and manages the University’s
graduate programs. Graduate programs are designed to meet the needs of students seeking
professional advancement, career mobility, or further enrichment. Graduate Studies also
provides leadership for the Graduate Council and the Graduate Assistantship Program.
Courses are offered in 16-week sessions meeting once a week in the evenings and on the
weekends or in a time-shortened format of two concentrated eight-week sessions in the regular
academic semester and in weekend workshop formats, both on- and off-campus. Courses are
offered during the year at various sites in Maryland. The workshops are designed for and geared
toward the interest of working adults in industry, government, education and social service agencies.
Whether students wish to pursue a degree or a certificate, improve their professional capabilities,
or enrich their personal lives, they may choose from among the many graduate offerings at the
