The Pukka Rucka
My A2 project was a product designed to improve the rucking/jackal technique for rugby players to
become more confident and stronger when competing in a ruck. There are no products on the market
that specifically work on improving body position in the ruck, therefore, The Pukka Rucka needed to
make the user get into a low body position and provide an element that would challenge the user in that
position. For example, in a rugby game, at the ruck there are other players looking to force you off the ball,
so there are forces being applied. Therefore, I added a resistance function in which the user had to get
into the low body position and drive their body using their core muscles to push back two pads attached
to a resistance band with their shoulders. This looks to replicate pushing a player off the ball. In turn, The
Pukka Rucka not only improves the ruck technique but also worked on strengthening the leg muscles
(gluteus maximus, hamstring group and quadriceps) plus the strengthening of the core (rectus abdominis
and erector spinae group). This also prevents the risk of injury as tendons and ligaments around the knee
and hip joints will be strengthened.
