On Friday, May 10, 2019, the COACH Foundation Juneteenth Planning Com- mittee met to finalize plans for the 7th Annual June- teenth Celebration. The event will be held on Satur- day, June 15, 2019, from 2:30 to 5:30 p. m., at the Charles Davis Conference Center, 1002 E. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.
This is a free event with complimentary dinner, music and panel discussion of issues pertinent to the community.
The celebration will honor the memories of 7 outstanding citizens, who left their footprints and a blue print for our youth and adults to follow, COACH Founder and CEO, Rev. Willie G. Dixon said.
“A great historian, Henry Toby, stated, “Every person should feel ashamed to die, until they have con- tributed to the betterment of mankind.” In that regard, for Father’s Day we will honor the life and legacy of: Rev. Abraham Brown, C. Blythe Andrews, Jr., Cullen “Buster” Williams, Alton White, James Hammond, Charles “Goosby” Jones, and Perry Harvey, Jr.,” Rev. Dixon said. “Each of these men fulfilled their God-given purposes in life.”
Rev. Dixon added that he’s amazed at the number of people of all ages and eth- nic groups that are not fa- miliar with the history and

purpose of Juneteenth.
“It is often stated that, if you don’t remember your history, you will find your- self falling back into the bondage from which you were delivered. It all had to do with slavery and many people say that’s the past, forget about it because this is a new day. I take a lesson from my Jewish brothers who state, ‘we will never for- get the Holocaust and the years we were in bondage’,”
he said.
“In remembering June-
teenth, we must be mindful that President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emanci- pation Proclamation on Jan- uary 1, 1863. The enslaved people in Galveston, Texas did not learn that slavery had been abolished until June 19, 1865,” he con- cluded.
