When Essie was a young teenager she moved to Tampa, Florida, where she lived with her Aunt Marie Mills and worked, illegally, in the kitchen of a bar. During that time, her nickname was “Cookie”, and she was forced to hide whenever city inspectors came around since she was underage.

She had been told by a mentor that her future husband would be a man in uniform. Appar- ently, Henry Lee Counts didn’t need such mentoring as he de- clared Essie would be his wife upon their first meeting. And so began a relationship that would span 62 years of marriage and produce 6 bright, beautiful chil- dren: 5 sons and 1 daughter.
