MAMA’S SPECIAL ROCKING CHAIR
LEILA SMITH WILLIAMS Transition: August 22, 2002
Growing up in a rural community near Chattahoochee, a carved rocking chair was commonly sighted on the front porch of an ole A-type roof wooden home. As the story was told, Mama’s home was re- built by their neighbors after a fire dam- aged the new home. Most memorable, in her heart was an old pine rocking chair, with a tall back that her daddy had made by hand; and how she felt so “special” when in her daddy’s arms as he rocked in that “special” chair. Of course, being the baby girl of four sisters, she felt “special” all the time anyway!
During her lifetime, Mama purchased a few chairs and even received two as gifts; each had that “special” feeling much like the special memories of she and her daddy together, in “her” special rocking chair.
Perhaps, she knew how “special” she made her children, grands and others feel as she sat in her “special” rocking chair – always loved; safe in her arms; inspired and encouraged; “lovingly” disciplining with her “left-hand;” laughter and wisdom imparted.
Optimistically speaking and with emotions, on August 22, 2002, she said, “I am leaving this place and going where Jesus went to prepare a place for us. Would you like the rocking chair, I don’t need it anymore?”Assuredly, “In His presence is fullness of joy, at His right hand are pleas- ures forevermore” (Psalms 16:11). And too, I am safe in His arms in His “special” rocking chair! Until then, each of you rock on and I hope to see you again!
Goodnight Mama, we will see you in the morning! Your children, Juanita, Leatricia, Earliest, Valretha, Maggie, Norma, Michelle, and grandchildren.
