Catholic School Sends Kindergartener Home Over Haircut
Jalyn Broussard’s haircut led to the school sending him home.
BELMONT, CA --- Jalyn Broussard went to kinder- garten one day, proudly sporting a new hairstyle. But his modern fade quickly raised eyebrows among administrators at his Bel- mont, Calif., Catholic school. Of- ficials called the 5-year-old’s mother to pick him up because his haircut violated the school’s standards. She was outraged.
The school and Jalyn’s fam- ily reached a stalemate. The fam- ily filed a complaint with the U. S. Department of Education’s Of- fice for Civil Rights last week, ac- cusing Immaculate Heart of Mary School of discriminating against their African-American child.
Mariana Broussard, Jalyn’s mother, said in the com- plaint that the principal, Teri Grosey, told her that Jalyn’s haircut was distracting and vio- lates the school’s hairstyle policy.
Broussard said Jalyn felt embarrassed and unfairly sin- gled out.
The Archdiocese of San Fran- cisco declined to comment be- cause it had not read the complaint.
Broussard seeks about $16,000 for tuition reimburse- ment for Jalyn and his brother, who was a second-grader at the school.

The new statue will be built with private money. Its final cost has not yet been deter- mined, though estimates amount to $350,000. Rep.

Boko Haram took control of a large area of north-eastern Nigeria last year and declared a caliphate (a state governed in ac-
cordance with Islamic law). However, Nigeria's military, backed by troops from neighbor- ing countries, has recaptured
most of the territory.
In an effort to counter the
growing violence, Nigeria is leading a military effort with neighbor, ring countries. Mr. Buhari, Nigeria’s president has called for the regional military force to be deployed more rap- idly.
