Retirement Closes 41-Year Career Educating Others

Last month, family mem- bers, church members, co- workers, and friends gathered at Tampa Palms Golf & Coun- try Club Resort for the retire- ment celebration of Dr. Cora Phelps Dunkley. Dr. Dunkley, a longtime Tampa educator, retired after 41 years of service.
Her most recent role was to serve as an Associate professor at the University of South Florida, School of Information. She has served more than 13 years in that department at the university.
Her family members, hus- band, Paul Dunkley, son, Eric Dandy, and daughters, Dr. Tonja Dandy, both of Nashville, Tennessee, and Shevon D. Coles, of Mont- gomery, Alabama, were among those assembled at the cele- bration.
The Honorable Judge Barbara Twine-Thomas served as the Mistress of Cere- mony for the event. Others who spoke at the event in- cluded: Dr. James An- drews, Director of the USF School of Information; her pastor, and Rev. Dr. David W. Green, Sr.

President of Gamma Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Dr. Samuel L. Wright, Sr., retired educator, and Paul Alexis, her former student, all sang solos at the occasion.
Dr. Dunkley is a lifelong educator, researcher, and ad- vocate for literacy and diver- sity in children’s literature. She is a published author in profes- sional journals and scholarly reviews. During her career, Dr. Dunkley has been the re-

cipient of numerous grants, in- cluding more than $300,000 earmarked for bringing in- creased library services to un- derserviced populations.
Speaking engagements have taken her to locations through- out the country as well as in South Africa, and Oxford, Eng- land.
Her favorite quote comes from Chaucer. It reads, “Filled with moral virtue (is her) speech; and gladly would (she) learn and gladly teach.”
