Superintendent Introduces Proposed Bell Schedule
On Tuesday, Jeff Eakins, Hillsborough County Public School District Superintend- ent introduced the proposed bell schedule for the upcom- ing year. The schedule must be approved by the Hillsbor- ough County School Board when it meets on October 17th.
The school district held three community meetings and sought input from stu- dents, parents, and others to create the new schedule. It was necessary because the old schedule did not allow enough time for bus drivers to trans- port students.
If approved, the bell schedule will change the start- ing time for elementary schools first, followed by high school start times, and finally middle school starting times. Under this proposed plan, high schools would start an hour later than they do now.
Before-school and after- school care at elementary and middle schools will be avail- able at a low cost for families in need of a safe environment for children.
The proposed schedule also allows additional plan- ning time for teachers and still allows for seven periods of in- struction each day. It also al- lows students to benefit from such programs as Dual Enroll- ment, Advanced Placement, Credit Recovery and other electives.
If the proposed schedule is approved, it will take effect in August 2018.
